Are Chatbots Really AI Agents or Even AI? Not Really.
Chatbots work by recognising patterns or keywords (yes, you’re correct — AI also works by recognising patterns, but we’ll get to that).
How Chatbots Work:
They check for specific keywords, regex, or pre-defined patterns. They don’t use complex contextual vector embeddings like AI (sounds fancy, right?). Because of this, they lack true contextual understanding.
Example: Imagine using a banking chatbot.
You ask: “What’s my balance?” → The bot replies: “Your balance is X.”
Now, you rephrase: “How much money do I have?” → The bot fails unless explicitly programmed for that exact phrase.
Next, you ask: “How much balance do I owe in my loan account after 10 months?” → The bot might just show your current loan balance instead of logically computing the future amount because it only matches keywords (like “loan account” and “balance”) without understanding the full context.
